萩原啓蔵 作　ぐい呑み「黒白」

黒地に白い釉薬。
この取り合わせは、啓蔵作品のなかでひとつのモチーフともいえるものです。同じ組み合わせでも、一点ごとにまったく異なる表情が現れるのが不思議なところです。

このぐい呑みから感じる印象は、きりりとした端正さ。
硬質なピアノの音のような、澄んだ緊張感があります。

一見すると落ち着いた佇まいですが、よく見ると白い釉薬には動きがあり、力強い表情を見せています。こうした釉薬の表情の豊かさは、啓蔵作品らしい魅力のひとつです。

啓蔵は最後に乳濁の釉薬をかけることが多く、釉薬の粘度や流れ方によって景色は大きく変わります。
この作品ではさらりとした白釉が使われているため、全体の印象がすっと引き締まり、独特の景色が生まれています。

静かな佇まいのなかに、釉薬の魅力が際立つ作品です。

Guinomi by Keizo Hagihara (萩原啓蔵)

Black clay with white glaze—this pairing can be seen as one of Keizō’s recurring motifs. Yet even with the same combination, each piece develops a completely different character, which is part of its fascination.

This guinomi conveys a sense of crisp restraint. There is a clear, taut quality to it, reminiscent of the clean, hard tone of a piano.

At first glance the piece appears quiet and understated, but a closer look reveals movement in the white glaze.

Keizo often applies an opaque white glaze as a final layer, and the resulting surface can vary greatly depending on its viscosity and the way it flows. In this piece, the white glaze is relatively fluid, giving the form a sharply defined presence and producing a striking surface.

A quietly poised work in which the character of the glaze stands out with particular clarity.
